Poet's Note
This was originally written for a English Lit project.
It is a children's poem, and was in done in book form.
The project included reading the poem to five kindergarten
classes and a paper on their reactions )
It was a relative success, and years later remains a bedtime favorite with my own two small boys.
That being said, I hope you enjoy it.
Dragon Games
|
I’m afraid of dragons
When I turn out my light
Those scary, scaly visitors
Who only come at night
|
The darkness covers everything
I can’t see shape or size
Now up from under blackest night
The dragons slowly rise.
|
I feel them crawling down below
Emerging from their caves
I close my eyes and count to five
And beg them to behave
|
Soon on the floor, beside my door
I hear their scratching claws
Dragons creeping everywhere
Snarl their smacking jaws
|
I tuck my sheet around me close
And cover up my feet
For tender toes, a dragon knows
Could make a tasty treat
|
Those dragons seem their scariest
When they are white and black
Coloring my dragons takes
The shivers from my back
|
I’d guess that one in lavender
I’m sure that one is red
I need to know each dragon well
That hides beneath my bed
|
Outside prowling dragons wish to
Come in from the rain
Two very tiny dragons squeeze
Beneath the windowpane
|
The youngest dragons have new spikes
Upon their shiny tails
They love to practice blowing smoke
When breathing fire fails
|
Dragons may not really be
As scary as they claim
I think that even dragons could
Enjoy a little game
|
But when I turn my light back on
To ask them all to play
Those scary, scaly dragons all
Must hide themselves away
|
My nights of dragon games at last
Have given me the key
I’m afraid of dragons, but
They’re afraid of ME!
